DIVERGE at Carmichael Gallery

DIVERGE
The Art of Oddzoo

Opening Reception: September 6th, 2008, 8PM – Midnight

Exhibition Dates: September 6th – September 28th, 2008

1257 N. La Brea Ave.
West Hollywood, CA 90038

DIVERGE at Carmichael Gallery

Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art is proud to present DIVERGE, the solo debut of Oddzoo. The Hawaii-born and Los Angeles-based artist will showcase around 15 works of acrylic, oil, pencil and ink that reflect upon the adjustments we make, opportunities we gain, and things we learn when life unexpectedly shifts itself from its anticipated path. An opening reception with the artist in attendance will be held on Saturday, September 6th, 2008, from 8pm – Midnight. The exhibition will be open for viewing through Sunday, September 28th, 2008.

Whilst there has always been an intrinsically timeless quality to the work of Oddzoo, there is a marked maturity in his newest pieces. Combining creative and life experience, the young artist continues to forge a unique identity in subject matter and style. This is particularly revealed in his broad range of expression, concentration to detail, and exciting use of color. Concerning his talent for the latter, Oddzoo comments that he purposefully maintains a balance between careful preparation and emotional spontaneity - "there are times when I'll use certain colors because it pertains to some metaphorical significance...to intentionally provoke a certain mood. Then again there's times when I just really enjoy using a particular color and run with it." Inspiration arises from many aspects of his life and imagination, but it is music that is his "driving force...It will alter a mood, the way I handle my paint, thought process, everything."

BLVD Gallery is proud to present “Disconnected” a showing of new works by frequent collaborators Marco Zamora and Derek Albeck. Both of these artists work maintain a dark, somewhat brooding atmosphere that speaks toward the vulnerability of the modern condition.

The characters in Marco Zamora’s densely populated street scenes, created with layered ink washes, glide through the frame intent on their destinations without giving the viewer any sense of inclusion. Derek Albecks richly patterned works create a vertiginous feeling of falling and of physical absence that overwhelms ones senses. Both artists have collaborated on major projects with the shoe manufacturer Vans as well as various exhibitions throughout the west coast.

Marco Zamora was born and currently lives and works in Pomona, California. In 2004 he graduated from California Institute of the Arts, with a Bachelor of Fine Art. Using the paintbrush and pen to draw, Marco develops imagery about the urban landscape and the people that inhabit it. Producing a richly complex and experimental image, Marco goes into a neighborhood and shoots a spot, recontectualizing and collaging figures to create each paintings identity. City life, his culture, color/scale experimentation, and the working class have influenced his artwork. Splitting his time between painting and apparel design, Marco's recent work can be seen in a variety of Van's ads and collaboration projects as well as galleries up and down the west coast.

Derek Albeck was born in the San Fernando Valley of Southern California, and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. In 2005 he graduated with honors from California State University Northridge with a Bachelors in Art, focusing on printmaking and painting. Developing complex figurative works using the graphic sensibilities absorbed from his studies in the various forms of printmaking, Derek's paintings, drawings and serigraphs serve as an intense investigation and critique on the human condition. Derek's work has been exhibited in galleries along the west coast as well as Canada and the U.K., and was recently included in the Vans Sky Gallery billboard project.

Who is Bozo Texino? Film Screening

Thursday the 18th September, 7pm, £4, all profits go to Mind the mental health charity.
Who is Bozo Texino? chronicles the search for the source of a ubiquitous and mythic rail graffiti-- a simple sketch of a character with an infinity-shaped hat and the scrawled moniker, "Bozo Texino"-- a drawing seen on railcars for over 80 years. Daniel's gritty black and white film uncovers a secret society and it's underground universe of hobo and railworker graffiti, and includes interviews with legendary boxcar artists, Coaltrain, Herby, Colossus of Roads, and The Rambler. Shooting over a 16-year period, Daniel rode freights across the West carrying a Super-8 sound camera and a 16mm Bolex. During his quest he discovered the roots of a folkloric tradition that has gone mostly unnoticed for a century. Taking inspiration from Beat artists Robert Frank and Jack Kerouac, the film functions as both a sub-cultural documentary and a stylized fable on wanderlust and outsider identity.
"I was drawn to the subject by the universal graffiti impulse and the classic, corny notion of freight train blues escape." - Bill Daniel, Director
